The extended essay is an independent, self-directed piece of research, culminating in a 4,000-word paper. As a required component, it provides:

• practical preparation for the kinds of undergraduate research required at tertiary level
• an opportunity for students to engage in an in-depth study of a topic of interest within a chosen subject.

Emphasis is placed on the research process:

• formulating an appropriate research question
• engaging in a personal exploration of the topic
• communicating ideas
• developing an argument.

Participation in this process develops the capacity to:

• analyze
• synthesize
• evaluate knowledge.

Students are supported throughout the process with advice and guidance from a supervisor (usually a teacher at the school).  All Essays must be submitted through "Turn It In" in order to be eligible for the required teacher/supervisor signature.

Seniors:

• Be sure you are working on your EE over the summer your rough draft is due when you return to school. 
• Stay in communication with your EE supervisor.
• Follow the guidelines given to you by Dr. Graffam.

Juniors:

• It is never to early to start thinking about a topic for your EE.  In November we will start developing your EE.
• If you are considering a History topic it is a great idea to focus on state or local history.
• Focus your question on a narrow topic, larger is not better.
• You are responsible for 1000 words before you leave for Summer Break, those who have not meet that standard will be required to return to school June 11th, 12th, and 13th for work sessions in the Media Center.

Dr. Graffam's Updates:

For the Extended Essay, here are the dates that matter:

• November begin thinking about your EE Question 
• First week in February:   Initial Orientation to EE
• Last week in February:  Follow-up Session on EE (Everyone must have an EE question for review) 
• Second week in March:      EE Question/Topic Due
• First week in April: Mentor/Supervisors assigned or approved
• Second week in May:     Meet supervisor checklist deadlines or complete after school Extended Essay Preparations
• First week in June:  1000 words of the rough draft to be completed*
• Last school day in October:  Final copy due

*Minimum requirements must be met prior to the end of the school year. 

Students who have not met these requirement will be required to attend all manditory work sessions in the HCHS Media Center beginning Monday June 11th - Wednesday June 13th.  Sessions will begin at 9:00 a.m. and extend until 3:00 p.m.

The students will be responsible for their own transportation and lunch.

Once they have met the minimum requirements they will be released from the work session.
